Design, electronics, software and prototypes

You can hire me for one part of it. Most clients have a small product that does not exist yet and want one person to do the whole thing.

Mechatronic design & 3D CAD

A design that can be made and assembled.

I draw in SolidWorks: assemblies, individual parts, enclosures and mechanisms. A nice render says little. What matters is whether the design holds up. Whether the parts fit, whether you can reach things during assembly, and whether something can be milled or printed without becoming needlessly expensive.

If I am unsure about a fit or a movement, I draw it first and print it to see whether it works.

My contribution
  • 3D models and assemblies
  • Production drawings with tolerances
  • Bill of materials (BOM)
  • STEP files for suppliers
  • Advice on material and production method
Tools
  • SolidWorks
  • FreeCAD
  • Blender
  • STEP / DXF export

Electronics & PCB design

A circuit and a board you can get built.

Simple control circuits, but also mixed analogue and digital designs with a microcontroller. I work in Altium Designer, or in KiCad where that fits better.

You get the schematic, the layout and the files for the fab house: Gerbers, the bill of materials and pick-and-place. With a recommendation for a fab house that does this kind of work, so a second order goes smoothly too.

My contribution
  • Schematic and PCB layout
  • Gerber and manufacturing files
  • Bill of materials and component selection
  • Pick-and-place file
  • Basic debug and measurement report
Tools
  • Altium Designer
  • KiCad
  • Altium CircuitStudio
  • LTspice

Embedded software & control

The firmware that makes the device work.

Embedded C and C++ for microcontrollers. Python for everything around it: reading measurements, automating tests, analysing data and building tools for the workshop.

I like working in code that already exists. At VanRaam I wrote along with the existing firmware and helped debug it. That goes faster than starting again.

My contribution
  • Firmware for microcontrollers
  • Communication protocols (I²C, SPI, UART, CAN)
  • Python tooling for measurement and automation
  • Documentation and handover of source code
Tools
  • Embedded C / C++
  • Python
  • Arduino
  • Silicon Labs
  • STM32

Test rigs & measurement systems

Building a rig to measure whether something works.

You want to know whether something works before you make it. Loading a motor, reading a sensor, ageing something faster, or running a product a thousand times to see what fails first.

I design the mechanics, the measurement electronics and the software, and put the whole thing together. This is the work I know most about, because it needs mechanics, electronics and software at the same time.

My contribution
  • Mechanical design of the rig
  • Measurement electronics and wiring
  • Control and data acquisition
  • Reporting on the measurements
Tools
  • Python
  • C/C++
  • Sensors
  • Load cells
  • Oscilloscope

Prototyping & small series

Making prototypes and small series.

For a first prototype a 3D print is usually fastest. If plastic is not enough, it can go through silicone moulds and vacuum casting, or through metal SLM and nylon SLS at a supplier.

I also handle ordering boards and parts, assembly and wiring. You do not have to work out where to go yourself.

My contribution
  • 3D printed prototypes
  • Small series via moulds or suppliers
  • Sourcing PCB/PCBA and components
  • Assembly and wiring
Tools
  • FDM
  • Resin
  • Nylon SLS
  • Metal SLM
  • Silicone moulds
  • Laser cutting

Working together

Practical terms

So you know where you stand before we start.

Rate€ 85 per hour, excluding VAT (indicative)
Fixed pricePossible once the scope is clear
MinimumHalf a day (4 hours)
On sitePossible across the eastern Netherlands and beyond
WorkshopOwn workshop in Didam, the Netherlands
First callFree, around 30 minutes
Response timeWithin one working day
ConfidentialityAn NDA up front is no problem at all
OwnershipYou own the design; we agree this in advance

The rate above is indicative. If the job is clearly defined, I prefer to quote a fixed price.

Describe the problem in plain language

I will tell you what I think is needed, and whether I am the right person for it. You do not need to work that out before you call.
